Before you decide on a treatment option, there are certain things that you have to consider first. If your physician suggests microsurgery or radiation, here are some things that you should consider:
- Both treatment options are effective when it comes to the removal of the tumor.
- Radiation may come with various side effects like induced malignancy.
- Radiation can only be used depending on the size and the location of the tumor since swelling may occur after the therapy.
- Microsurgery is better than radiation therapy since the tumor has cystic components.
- Radiation therapy is not recommended in case the patient already had the same therapy on the same area.
There are three other surgical options available for acoustic neuroma. These surgeries include the following:
- Translabyrinthine – this is considered as the oldest surgical procedure for acoustic neuroma. This surgical procedure can provide the best line of sight for the facial nerve and has the highest success rate. However, this surgery may sacrifice an individual’s hearing sensation. Translabyrinthine can be the best option in case the tumor is too large to preserve the hearing or the patient is already suffering from hearing loss.
- Middle fossa – this surgical approach is used if the patient wants to try preserving his/her hearing sensation. Based on statistics, patients with better hearing sensation have higher chance of preserving it after the surgery. The incision is made on the front part of the ear where a bone flap can be created.
- Retrosigmoid (suboccipital) – this surgical approach can also be sued to preserve hearing sensation. The success rate of this surgery is at 30% to 65% for tumors that are smaller than 1.5 centimeters with good hearing sensation and limited involvement of the internal auditory canal. However, if the tumor extends to the fundus, this can make it impossible to preserve hearing. The removal of the tumor is done with the use of mirrors.
